The Garlaban, the land of Marcel Pagnol

Le Garlaban is a mountain located near the town of Aubagne, Marcel Pagnol’s hometown. This mountain features prominently in several of his literary and cinematographic works, particularly in the childhood memories he recounts in his autobiographical novels “La Gloire de mon Père” and “Le Château de ma Mère”.

Symbolising his Provençal roots and his attachment to the region’s nature, he often evoked the Garlaban in his writings, describing its green hills, fragrant paths and picturesque landscapes.

Aubagne is now a place of commemoration for all fans of the Provençal artist. It is home to the “Mas de la Treille”, Pagnol’s family home, which is now a museum dedicated to the author and his work.

Marcel Pagnol’s most beautiful walks

Today, the Garlaban has become a popular hiking destination for outdoor enthusiasts and fans of Marcel Pagnol. Numerous hiking trails allow you to explore this mountain and admire the magnificent panoramas of Provence. Visitors can follow in the author’s footsteps and be enchanted by the natural beauty that inspired Marcel Pagnol throughout his life.

The different walks linked to Marcel Pagnol :

Marcel Pagnol trail – La Treille

The Sentier de Marcel Pagnol is a popular hiking trail that begins in the village of La Treille, near Aubagne. This trail takes you through the hills and landscapes that played such an important role in Pagnol’s childhood memories. You can discover the places that inspired his novel “La Gloire de mon Père” and soak up the Provençal atmosphere that he described so well.

Manon des Sources trail – La Bastide Neuve

This trail takes you to the source of Manon, an emblematic place in Marcel Pagnol’s novel “Manon des Sources”. The walk begins at La Bastide Neuve, a hamlet near Aubagne, and allows you to follow in the footsteps of Pagnol’s characters in this magnificent Provencal landscape.

Sentier des Gorguettes – Aubagne

The Sentier des Gorguettes is an easy walk starting out from Aubagne, offering panoramic views of the Garlaban region and surrounding hills. This walk will allow you to discover the rural landscapes that inspired the author and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of his works.

Garlaban path – Aubagne

The Garlaban hike takes you over the hills of this emblematic mountain, which played a central role in Pagnol’s work. You can explore the paths the writer often took and soak up the atmosphere that inspired his stories.

Stay at the 5-star Hôtel Baumanière, close to Marcel Pagnol’s walks

For your stay in Provence, set down your suitcases at Baumanière, a 5-star hotel in Les Baux-de-Provence, and take advantage of the many walks linked to Marcel Pagnol.

Our estate welcomes you to a verdant setting in the heart of Provence, in the Alpilles, surrounded by idyllic spots where you can admire the unspoilt nature of the garrigues and the song of the cicadas.

At Baumanière Les Baux-de-Provence, treat yourself to a well-deserved break after your hikes in our Sisley Spa, where the brand’s phyto-aromatic treatments are lavished on you by our Spa practitioners, for an exceptional sensory experience. The herbal tea room, opening onto our gardens, the steam room and sauna, the fitness room… Everything is designed to offer you a gentle interlude in a privileged setting, like the one so aptly described by Marcel Pagnol.

In our luxurious rooms, the decor, mostly vintage, is an ode to Provencal tradition. The warm tones of ochre, terracotta and, of course, green are reminiscent of the natural surroundings often featured in the films of the Provencal artist.

Gastronomy at Baumanière, Marcel Pagnol’s ode to Provence

Our two gourmet restaurants draw their inspiration from Provence to create their exceptional dishes, a blend of tradition and creativity. L‘Oustau de Baumanière, with 3 Michelin stars, welcomes you to an idyllic setting on the edge of the Val d’Enfer and at the foot of Les Baux-de-Provence. Take advantage of our shaded terrace to sample the dishes of our Chef Glenn Viel and enjoy a meal out of time with the “Ballade Menu”, a tasting in several stages inspired by the Provencal region, among other things.

You can also enjoy Provençal gastronomy in our gourmet restaurant La Cabro d’Or, where Chef Michel Hulin uses local produce in a menu that changes with the seasons and what the local produce has to offer. The restaurant’s friendly, refined setting is the ideal place to discover Provence in a different way.

Activities at Les Baux-de-Provence

  • Hiking, the ideal way to visit Les Baux-de-Provence

On foot or by bike, discover the Alpilles Regional Park and the exceptional flora and fauna that make up this remarkable landscape.

Take the Val d’Enfer trail, for example, for a hike in the heart of a mineral landscape, with its eroded limestone rocks and original, tormented shapes. Many troglodytic constructions can be seen here, blending into the rock faces of Les Baux-de-Provence and adorning the landscape with their olive-green shutters.

If you’d like to discover these exceptional landscapes in a different way, Le Petit Roman in Maussane-les-Alpilles offers horse-riding excursions for all levels. Passion and conviviality are the watchwords of this stable rooted in the distinctive Alpilles region. We offer a range of tours to suit all tastes.

Exceptional gastronomy for an exceptional region

Visiting the region also means discovering its gastronomy, and in particular the region’s typical raw materials that adorn many Provencal dishes. Visit the region’s many oil mills, such as CastelaS, whose olive oils are also on sale at the Baumanière Boutique, opposite the three-star gourmet restaurant l’Oustau de Baumanière. Discover the techniques used to extract PDO olive oil from Les Baux-de-Provence, and enjoy an afternoon of tasting the region’s “green gold”.

Visiting around les Baux-de-Provence

  • Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Capital of the Alpilles

During your stay in Provence, you’ll want to discover the many treasures the Alpilles region has to offer. Just a few minutes from Les Baux-de-Provence, discover Maussane-les-Alpilles, a typical Provencal village of undeniable charm, with its café terraces in the shade of plane trees, its narrow streets typical of the south and its small shops with an old-fashioned character. A little further north, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, capital of the Alpilles region, is a must-see on any Provencal getaway. Built on an ancient site thousands of years old, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a haven of peace, far from the hustle and bustle of tourist towns.

Avignon, a city of art and history

For aficionados of the arts, and theater in particular, the Festival d’Avignon promises to amaze. Comprising an “IN” and an “OFF” section, this summertime gathering features numerous theatrical troupes and other performers each year, with shows around every corner promising a festive, convivial atmosphere in the heart of a city with a notable historical heritage. Indeed, the Palais des Papes bears witness to the city’s medieval past, having welcomed numerous Popes from the 14th century onwards.
