Right in the heart of the Alpilles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is an essential stop in Provence. Its authentic streets, its shops, its old stone buildings, its squares and its terraces make it exceptional and contribute to the town's undeniable charm.
Steeped in History, the town was built on an ancient Roman site antique that dates from over 2000 years ago, including the site of Glanum. The Thermes, the Triumphal Arch and the Antiques Mausoleum testify to the town's past. Far from the tumult of the tourist cities of the Riviera, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a haven of peace where you can taste the sweetness of Provençal life.
A city of history but also of art, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence attracts celebrities and aesthetes. It has inspired a great number of artists with the beauty of its Roman ruins and the surrounding Provençal countryside: olive trees, cypress, poppies and wheat fields… Vincent Van Gogh is one of its most well-known devotees with more than 150 canvasses that depict the town and its surroundings.
Where to dine in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence:
• Château des Alpilles - Route du Rougadou
• La Table d'Yvan - 1 chemin Gaulois
• Le Café de la Place - 17 Place de la République
• Rocco - 11 Rue de la Commune
Bordered by the Alpilles, here is another charming and authentic village with its stone house; a great place for a quick stop.
MAUSSANE LES ALPILLES
A small picturesque village bordering the Alpilles and surrounded by olive groves, today Maussane and its neighbour Mouries are the leading producers of olive oil in France. In Maussane, stop for a drink at a café terrace on the village square and lose yourself in the Provencal way of life.
The village where Alphonse Daudet wrote "Lettres de mon Moulin". Climb the hill to the windmill, from which you have a sweeping panorama of the Alpilles, then continue to the Château de Montauban where Daudet sometimes lived.
• A curiosity to see: the Roman aqueduct of Barbegal
Dating from the 2nd century, in ancient times it was part of a Roman hydraulic milling complex and supplied the flour mills with water.
